To lose weight, we need to eat less and exercise more. It is the latter that makes many a slimmer balk at the very thought. If that is you, before you dismiss it completely, let us consider some facts and varied options.
It is totally unnatural for human beings to sit down all day, like most peopleВґs jobs or leisure time demand. Our bodies have not developed to cope with this sedentary lifestyle. But you are not reading this for a lecture about healthy lifestyles; you are probably reading this because you (or someone you care for) want to lose weight. Exercise is very useful for anyone losing weight. Everyone knows that exercise burns off calories and kilojoules, burning off stored fat and burning off energy in the food we eat. But there is another, lesser-known fact.
When we get regular exercise, our bodyВґs control system, our metabolism, speeds up. And a faster metabolism means better weight loss. It has been found that when people do a varied regular exercise routine, they continue to burn more energy even when sitting down watching TV.
This is all very fine, you may say, but maybe you do not like the idea of exercise. Well, some exercise is better than no exercise, and there is such a huge variety that there will be an exercise that you like. Here are a few examples.
- Attending Yoga classes. There are various different types of Yoga. Some are quite athletic, whilst others are more spiritual energy healing in nature. You can choose a type that suits you best.
- Attending martial arts classes.
- Working out at the gym - ideally, you can make sure this is a varied program so your whole body gets exercised and challenged. The biggest mistake slimmers make at the gym is to stick to the treadmill.
- Running or jogging outside in the fresh air.
- Attending dance classes.
- Going out dancing at night. This does not have to be a youngsters' nightclub unless you are a youngster of course. There are many clubs that have Salsa, for example.
- Walking to work if this is say up to 1 hour away from home. I know someone who lost about 20kg walking to and from work most days, which was about 90 minutes away.
- Taking up ballroom dancing.
- Getting a computer game like the Wii Fit and using it.
- Getting an exercise DVD that you can use at home.
- Getting an exercise bike that you can pedal whilst watching TV.
- If you are in a relationship, making love more often and taking a more active role.
- Doing Power Plate exercises at a beauty salon - it exercises you in a fraction of the time.
- Surfing, body-boarding, or skiing (depending on where you live and the seasons).
- Hiking with a hiking group.
- Mountain climbing; there are also some indoor mountain climbing centres, depending on where you live.
- Walking whenever possible instead of using a lift/elevator, car, or bus, for example.
- Attending Pilates classes or one-to-one Pilates tuition.
- Engaging the services of a personal trainer if budget allows.
- Swimming - a great all-round exercise - or taking swimming classes.
- Attending aqua aerobics classes.
- Skipping rope.
- Learning a form of boxing (great for releasing pent-up tension).
- Walking during your lunch break.
- Getting a dog and walking it twice a day.
As you can see, the list is very long. And these are just a few suggestions. There is an exercise that you can do and enjoy. It is good to start small and build up gradually. For example, if you choose to use an exercise DVD at home, aim for 15 minutes a day on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, for example. You can always do more if you want to, but the 15 minute goal is a great starter goal. The next week, you can aim to increase the time on those days to 20 minutes, and the week after that, you can graduate to 30 minutes with ease. If you still find that you cannot get your body moving, then there is an emotional block in your path.
